Mid May and we set off to Germany, travelling by car, through the Channel Tunnel to Calais with an overnight stay in Berges, France. This small, charming medieval town is less than an hours drive from Calais and well worth a visit, if only to take dinner at Le Bruegel!
Travelling by road in this part of Europe is mostly pleasurable. Traffic is lighter than the UK and combined with the luxury of a competent SatNav we made short work of the journey. The route took us through a bit of France then Belgium, Luxembourg and finally into Germany. We were based in Dreisbach in Saarland, on the banks of the stunning River Saar.
I used Komoot for mapping using the Saarloop Path as the basis of my routes. I explored randomly following footpaths wherever possible weaving on and off the Saar-Hunsrück Climb long-distance hiking trail.
My first trip was up to the viewing tower (The Saarschleife) in the spa town of Orscholz. Quite a climb through forested tracks from the river below but absolutely worth the effort though… what a view!!
Most of the tracks I followed during my stay were through rich agricultural land, broadleaf and coniferous forests and quiet roads. Lots of the paths are well maintained (I though at times I was following in the path of a silent lawnmower!).
All in all a beautiful part of Europe and well worth a second visit I think.
WARNING many of the scenes in the photo gallery contain contain images of trees… lots and lots of trees 🙂
