In 2015 we gathered with family in a cottage in Gosforth for a short break (and pre LaGomera walk training!). Complete with kayak, Land Rover and walking boots we hit the trails around Wasdale.

There are no shortage of spectacular routes but this one took us up over Whin Rigg to Illgil Head then down to Wasdale Head at the northern end of Wastwater. It was then a leisurely stroll along the North west side of the lake back to the cars.

This was one of many trips which included gathering shells at Seascale beach and kayaking across the deepest lake in England… Wastwater.

Crossing the lake in a kayak is an eerie experience especially when you know the story of Margaret Hogg... :-0. Just knowing it is also the deepest lake in the country generates a feeling of vertigo!!
